Setting up a bench for ink tests
What an ink testing bench needs: a washable surface, controlled light, spill containment and a fixed capture setup, all of which can be improvised.
Ink testing needs a bench rather than a desk. The difference is that a bench is expected to get wet, holds its light and its geometry constant between sessions, and can be wiped down without ceremony. None of that requires buying furniture. It requires deciding once where things go and then not moving them.

Consistent geometry is the whole point
The reason to fix your light and camera is that comparison depends on it. Federal imaging guidance treats this as a formal problem: FADGI's digital imaging framework exists to describe and validate imaging performance and quality against international standards, in two parts, because performance you have not defined is performance you cannot check.
Your version is a strip of tape on the desk marking where the lamp stands and where the phone goes. It sounds trivial. It is the difference between a year of comparable images and a year of pretty ones.
Handling rules are cheap and worth writing down
Institutional practice is to write handling rules down rather than rely on habit. Stanford publishes its chemical hygiene plan as a standing document covering how hazardous materials are handled, stored and cleaned up. Household ink is not a laboratory hazard, but the principle holds: decide in advance what happens when something spills, and write it on a card.
Three rules cover most of it. Nothing open goes near the edge of the bench. Rinse water goes in the jar, never the sink with a pen over it. Anything that stains gets wiped immediately, because dried ink on a light surface takes far longer.
Setting it up in twenty minutes
Clear a stretch of surface and put a board or a sheet of glass on it. Set the tray at the center. Mark the lamp position and the phone position with tape. Put the rinse jar and the waste jar at the back, behind the tray, so nothing has to be lifted over open ink. Stack absorbent paper on one side and offcuts on the other.

Common questions
Do I need a fume extractor? No. Standard writing inks are water-based and do not require ventilation beyond normal room air. Solvent cleaners are a different question, and most people never need them.
Is a glass surface better than wood? For testing, yes, because it does not absorb and it wipes clean. For writing, it is too hard, which is why the bench and the writing desk can sensibly be different places.
How do I stop cross-contamination between inks? Rinse in two stages, dirty jar then clean jar, and dry the nib on paper before the next ink. Skipping the second rinse is where muddy results come from.
Where should finished samples dry? Flat, on fresh absorbent paper, out of direct sun. Stacking them wet is how offset marks appear on the back of a sample.
