What an ink test actually involves, start to finish

The order a real ink test runs in, from stating one question to recording a result, and the difference between what you can measure and what you can only observe.

An ink test is not a swatch. A swatch shows what an ink looked like once, on one paper, under one light. A test answers a question you asked before you started, under conditions you can repeat. The difference is entirely in the setup, and the setup takes about ten minutes.

What to take away

  • Write the question first. Everything else follows from what you are trying to find out.
  • Control the paper, the pen, the light and the timing. Change one thing only.
  • Some properties are measurable at home. Others can only be observed and described.
  • Store the result with its conditions. A sample without conditions is not evidence.

The order a test runs in

  • State one question. For example: does this ink feather on my everyday pad.
  • Choose the control. Same paper, same pen, same ink you already know.
  • Fix the conditions. Same light, same underlay, same time of day.
  • Run the test and the control side by side, on one sheet.
  • Record immediately: date, paper, pen, ink, conditions, and the result.
  • Repeat once before you believe anything.

What conservators do, scaled down

The professional version is the same shape with better instruments. Conservation staff at the National Library of Medicine ran a multiphase project on the chemistry and aging of ballpoint pen ink and ended up developing a way to track color shift nondestructively, using image analysis rather than sampling, in order to examine a range of storage environments while rehousing a manuscript.

Two things are worth copying from that. They asked a specific question about aging under storage conditions rather than a general question about which ink was best. And they chose a method that did not destroy the object, which for you means testing on offcuts rather than on the letter you care about.

That last row deserves care. Distinguishing dye from pigment inks reliably takes instruments: one study used visible and near-infrared hyperspectral imaging to assess the spectral characteristics of dye-based and pigment-based inkjet prints, precisely because the two are hard to separate and dye inks are sometimes passed off as the more durable pigment kind.

Two conditions people forget

Humidity and temperature move dry times more than most people expect, which is why the same ink can seem fast in February and slow in August. Note the season if nothing else. The second forgotten condition is how long the pen sat before the test, since a nib that has been capped for an hour starts differently from one used continuously.

Writing the result down

A result is a sentence, not a photograph. Write what you asked, what you did, and what happened, in that order. Include the failure conditions: at what nib width did it bleed, after how many seconds did it stop smearing. A record like that is still useful in three years, when a photograph is not.

Common questions

How many papers should one test cover? Two. The control and the candidate. Three or more at once produces a chart you will not be able to interpret.

Can I trust a phone photo of a swatch? For shape and spread, yes. For color, no, unless you include a gray card and correct against it.

How long should a light fastness test run? A month in a bright window gives a visible result for most dye inks. Three months is better and is still not equivalent to years of ordinary storage.

Do I need to test water resistance if I never spill? Test it once. It tells you which category the ink is in, which predicts several other behaviors including how it will respond to a damp hand.
