Ink testing mistakes beginners make at home
Seven habits that make home ink tests useless, why each one breaks the result, and the small change that turns an impression into something you can rely on.
Most home ink tests produce a nice-looking page and no usable information. That is not because the person did it carelessly. It is because ink testing has a few specific traps, and every one of them looks like reasonable behavior at the time. Here they are, with the fix for each.

Dating and aging are harder than they look
The instinct after a month of window exposure is to draw a conclusion about how an ink will age. Professionals are more careful, because the problem is genuinely difficult. A case study combining a green analytical method with a traditional one for estimating relative and absolute ink age in ballpoint pen writing began by physically testing paper characteristics to confirm the sheets were comparable, then established relative dating with chromatography, and treated the absolute question as separate and harder.
Two lessons carry over. Confirm the papers are comparable before comparing what is written on them. And keep relative claims separate from absolute ones. Saying this ink faded more than that one is defensible. Saying it will last twenty years is not.
Image-based tests are real, and easy to overreach with
Digital analysis is genuinely useful and genuinely easy to misuse. One study identified scribes and inks on an 1819 manuscript using fractal algorithms and RGB image processing, which is the same family of technique a scanner and free software put within reach.
The trap is that consistent capture is doing most of the work. If your scans are taken at different settings on different days, you are measuring your scanner rather than the ink. Fix the settings once, write them down, and never change them mid-project.
Fixing a test that has already gone wrong
If you changed two things, throw the result away rather than reasoning around it. If you have no control paper, buy one pad and redo the tests you care about. If your notes lack conditions, they are impressions, and impressions are fine as long as you do not present them as results. Common questions
How much ink does a proper test use? Very little. A few lines and one heavy stroke per paper. A full page of swatching looks impressive and adds nothing.
Is a smartphone scanner app good enough? For shape and spread, yes. For color, no, because those apps adjust the image automatically and differently each time.
Should I test inks I already like? Yes, once, to establish them as controls. You cannot judge a new ink without something known to set beside it.
