No brands are compared here. What matters is the category of tool and what it does to a pen, because the tools that damage pens are damaging by design rather than by quality. Two of them are widely recommended and both deserve more caution than they usually get.

Why capillary action explains most repairs
Understanding what you are adjusting prevents most damage. Ink is held between the tines and in the feed channel by the balance between water sticking to a surface and water sticking to itself, which is the interplay of adhesion and cohesion that lets liquid climb into narrow spaces at all.
The tine gap is therefore a functional dimension, not cosmetic. Widen it and the pen floods. Close it and the pen dries. When you slide a shim between the tines you are altering that gap, which is why the correct instruction is a single gentle pass, not sawing.
The case against the ultrasonic cleaner
Ultrasonic cleaning is not gentle scrubbing. It works by producing collapsing bubbles that drive fluid at the surface being cleaned. A simulation study of ultrasonic cleaning describes the mechanism directly as high-speed, high-pressure cavitation microjets removing deposits.
That is a great deal of localized energy to apply to a pen that contains adhesives, plated metal, older plastics and possibly a hairline crack you cannot see. If you use one at all, use it on the section only, in cool water, briefly, and never on a whole assembled pen or on anything with a celluloid or casein body.
Tools that are not worth owning
Skip nib grinding equipment, tine-spreading pliers and anything sold as a pen repair kit containing tools you cannot name. Skip heat guns entirely, since separating a stuck section with heat is a skill people learn by ruining several pens first. If a job needs a tool you have never used, it is a job to send out.

- Look at the nib under magnification before touching it.

Is a bulb syringe worth buying? Yes. It turns a twenty minute flush into a two minute one, which means you will actually do it.
How much silicone grease should I use? A trace on a fingertip, worked into the seal. Excess grease migrates into the feed and causes flow problems of its own.
Can I use a pen flush solution? Commercial flushes exist and are mild. Cool water handles almost everything. Reach for a flush only after water has failed over a day.
What tool causes the most damage? Anything used with force on the nib. That includes shims, tweezers and fingernails. The nib is the part you cannot easily replace.
