A well arranged desk removes most pen problems before they happen. Not because it is tidy, but because the arrangement makes the right action easier than the wrong one. If the cap is always within reach, the pen gets capped. If the rinse jar lives at the back, nothing gets knocked into an open notebook. This is prevention by layout.

Posture creates pressure faults
The most common self-inflicted pen fault is pressing too hard, and pressing usually starts with a desk that is the wrong height or a chair that puts the forearm at an angle. Stanford's environmental health and safety guidance for office workers collects the everyday hazards of desk work, including workstation setup and the self-assessment steps that go with it.
The writing version is short. Feet flat, forearm supported, shoulder relaxed, the paper square or slightly angled toward your writing hand. If your shoulder rises while you write, the desk is too high.
Cleaning chemistry belongs in one place
Keep one rinse jar and one waste jar, both at the back, both with lids. Use cool water and nothing else for routine flushing. If you are ever tempted by a household cleaner, remember what you are handling: pH is a measure of how acidic or basic a solution is, on a scale where seven is neutral, and the strongly acidic or basic products under a kitchen sink sit far from that midpoint.
Pen materials, particularly older plastics and any exposed metal, do not benefit from either extreme. Water is neutral, dissolves water-based ink, and cannot damage anything in the pen.
Keep one pen inked, not six
A desk with six inked pens is a desk where five of them are drying. Ink one pen, use it until it needs a flush, then clean it and ink the next. That single habit removes hard starts, dried feeds and most of the cleaning backlog at once, and it costs nothing but the discipline of putting the others away.
Light and heat
Sunlight fades ink in the barrel and on the page, and heat drives the evaporation that causes hard starts. Neither belongs near a writing desk. Keep the pen rest out of a sunbeam, do not store pens on a windowsill or above a radiator, and if the desk is under a window, keep bottles in the closed box rather than on display.

Common questions
Does a pen rest actually matter? It matters because it gives the pen a place that is not rolling toward the edge. A folded card works as well as anything sold for the purpose.
Should the paper be square to the desk? For right-handed writers, square or slightly counterclockwise. For left-handed writers, rotated clockwise so the hand stays below the line.
Is a slanted surface better for the wrist? Many people find it reduces neck flexion and steadies flow. Test it with a ring binder under the pad before buying anything.
Where should an inked pen live overnight? Capped, nib up, in a cup or a case, away from the window. Horizontal is acceptable. Nib down invites ink into the cap.
