What fountain pen paper is made of, and why it matters

Fiber, sizing and alkaline reserve decide how paper writes and how long it lasts. What each ingredient does, and what to look for on the package.

Paper has three ingredients that matter to a writer: the fiber, the sizing and whatever alkaline material was added to keep acid at bay. Everything else, including the brand and most of the description, is downstream of those three. Knowing what each one does turns a wall of packaging into about four real choices.

The recipe that has held up

This is not a new question. The University of Iowa project's statement of goals traces current understanding of paper stability partly to the W. J. Barrow Research Laboratory's analysis of naturally aged historical specimens, which recommended that long-lasting modern papers be made from a pure form of cellulose, with a nonacidic sizing agent and an alkaline reserve such as calcium carbonate. Later accelerated-aging work on laboratory specimens supported those recommendations.

Pure cellulose, nonacidic sizing, alkaline reserve. If a package tells you those three things, it has told you nearly everything that matters for longevity.

Handmade is not a guarantee

The romance around handmade paper hides a lot of variation. Research on the structure and properties of traditional handmade bamboo paper during aging used artificial dry-heat accelerated aging to examine how structural properties relate to degradation, on the grounds that understanding that relationship is necessary for conserving historical documents.

The lesson for a buyer is that the method of manufacture does not settle the question. A handmade sheet made from unbleached, well-prepared fiber at neutral pH may outlast almost anything. A handmade sheet made cheaply may not. Ask about the fiber and the pH, not about the process.

Choosing by fiber

  • Cotton: soft surface, high fold strength, often more absorbent unless well sized.
  • Wood pulp, bleached and neutral: the workhorse, and usually the most consistent.
  • Bast fibers such as kozo or gampi: long fibers, strong and thin, often lightly sized.
  • Bamboo and other grass fibers: variable, often soft and absorbent.
  • Recycled: shorter fibers, more batch variation, more feathering.

Those categories overlap in practice, since most sheets blend fibers and the blend is rarely stated in full. Treat the list as a starting expectation rather than a promise.

Match that list to your pen. A wet nib on a soft cotton sheet with light sizing will feather regardless of how good the paper is in every other respect. Common questions

Is cotton paper better than wood pulp? For longevity and fold strength, often. For fountain pen writing, not automatically, because sizing decides more than fiber does.

What does one hundred percent cotton actually promise? The fiber source, and nothing about sizing, pH or surface. It is one of the four facts you need, not all of them.

Does bleaching harm paper? Older chlorine bleaching left residues that damaged sheets. Modern bleaching processes are gentler, and pH matters far more.

How can I tell the sizing on paper I already own? The water drop test. A drop that beads and sits for thirty seconds is hard sized. A drop that soaks straight in is not, and that sheet will feather under any wet nib you put on it.
