What paper conservators know that paper buyers rarely hear
No interviews here. What published conservation research establishes about paper strength, sizing and aging, and which parts of it should change how you buy paper.
Nobody was interviewed for this page, because the useful knowledge about paper is already published and checkable. Conservators test paper to decide how to save it, which means they measure the things a buyer only guesses at. Four of their findings translate directly into buying decisions, and one of them contradicts what most stationery advice says.

Sizing is structural
Gelatin sizing is usually described in stationery writing as the thing that keeps ink on the surface. In conservation it is treated as a consolidant. Work comparing paper strengthening with gelatin, Klucel G and Tylose solutions, combined with deacidification using magnesium hydroxide nanoparticles, was aimed squarely at extending the durability of historical papers rather than at how they take ink.
The buying consequence is that a well sized sheet is usually also a more durable sheet. When you choose hard sizing because a wet nib needs it, you are also choosing something that holds together better under handling.
Wet strength is its own problem
Paper that feels strong dry can tear in the hand when damp. Research on improving the wet tensile strength of kozo paper came out of a practical complaint: conservators using kozo paper as a first lining for hanging scrolls reported that current products were weak when wet and hard to handle, so the study looked at the role of hemicellulose in that behavior.
For a writer, this matters at the moment of a spill, a damp hand in summer, or an erasure. Papers with the same stated weight can behave very differently once wet.
Aging changes the sheet structurally as well as visually, which is why a paper that has sat in a warm room for years can feather with an ink that used to behave on it. The color shift is the symptom people notice. The change in how the surface takes liquid is the one that ruins the writing.
What conservation practice suggests for buying
- Prefer sheets that state their sizing and their pH, because those are the properties research keeps returning to.
- Treat wet handling as a separate question from dry strength.
- Expect aging to change surface behavior, not just color.
- Distrust any claim that is not attached to a measurement.

Common questions
Should I buy conservation-grade paper for everyday writing? No. It is expensive and often unnecessary. Buy it for the pages you intend to keep and use ordinary paper for the rest.
Is gelatin sizing better than synthetic sizing? Different, not better. Gelatin gives a particular surface and has a long documented history. Modern synthetic sizes are more consistent and cheaper.
Does deacidification work on a home shelf? Treatments exist for consumers, but they are for rescuing already-acidic paper. Buying neutral paper in the first place is easier and cheaper.
Where can I read this research myself? Conservation journals and open-access materials science journals publish most of it, and much is freely readable online. Search by the property you care about rather than by the product name, since the papers are written about cellulose and sizing agents rather than about brands of notebook.
