Paper experiments that each teach one thing
Seven short experiments on paper itself: grain, sizing, opacity, weight, watermarks, fiber and aging, each with the result you should expect.
These are experiments rather than projects. Each isolates one property of paper, takes a few minutes, and gives a result you can compare against another sheet. Do them on the paper you already own before you buy anything, because most of what people learn from reviews they could have learned in an afternoon at their own desk.

Where the fibers come from
The fiber pull test becomes far more interesting once you know what you are looking at. The Robert C. Williams Museum of Papermaking runs a paper fiber and natural dye living exhibition, a dedicated garden that grows the raw plant materials used in papermaking and natural dyeing so that visitors can handle the plants alongside the finished sheets.
That is the connection most people never make. A long, silky torn edge means long fibers, usually from a bast plant. A short, powdery edge means heavily beaten or short fiber, which will drink ink. You can see the difference with a fingernail and a window.
A useful contrast: papyrus
To understand what paper is, look at something that is not paper. The Illinois guide notes that papyrus is a paper-like material made by cutting or peeling the reed into strips, soaking them, laying them in overlapping layers, then pressing and drying them into sheets, with starch paste possibly used to strengthen the join.
Layered strips, not a mat of separated fibers. That distinction is the whole definition of paper, and holding the idea makes the backlight test suddenly legible: you are looking at how well the fibers were dispersed before the sheet was formed.
Running the aging test
Cut a sheet in half. Write the same line on both halves with the same ink. Tape one half inside a south-facing window and put the other in a drawer. After a month, put them side by side. Most people are surprised by how much has changed, and by which colors moved most.
Do the test twice a year on different papers and you will build a private ranking of light stability that no manufacturer publishes. It is also the fastest way to find out whether a favorite ink is a dye that will not survive a sunny room, which is a discovery better made on a test strip than on a letter you wanted to keep.

Common questions
How much paper do these experiments use? About four sheets in total. Use offcuts and the last pages of a notebook you have abandoned.
Do I need a scale for the weight check? A kitchen scale that reads to one gram is enough if you weigh ten sheets at once and divide.
Why does the drop test matter more than it looks? Because it isolates sizing from everything else. A drop that beads and sits is hard sizing. A drop that vanishes into the sheet is a paper that will feather.
Can I do the aging test faster? Not honestly. Accelerated aging in a lab uses controlled heat and humidity. A month in a window is the home version and it is slow for a reason.
