Cold air holds very little water. The regional pattern matters. Coastal British Columbia and Nova Scotia usually stay damper through winter, so ink problems there are milder and mould on stored paper is the bigger risk.

Ontario, Quebec, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba run much drier indoors once the furnace is working hard. Newfoundland and Labrador sits somewhere between, with wet coastal air and dry heated interiors.

Central forced-air heat is the main culprit in Canadian apartments and offices. It warms air, moves it constantly and pulls moisture out of everything it passes, including the open bottle on your desk. Measure where the ink lives, not where you sit. A shelf above a radiator, a drawer beside an exterior wall and a cupboard under a bathroom sink are three different climates in the same apartment. Record the reading morning and evening for a week in January.

If your working space reads below 30 per cent, treat every uncapped minute as a cost. If it reads above 60, watch for condensation on cold exterior walls and for mould on paper edges.

Temperature swings matter as much as the average. A windowsill that drops to 8 degrees overnight and warms to 24 by noon will move moisture in and out of paper repeatedly. That cycling does more damage than steady dryness.

Rehydration methods that work and the ones that ruin a bottle

Rehydrating fountain pen ink is possible, but it is a repair, not a routine. Do it in small steps and stop as soon as the ink flows normally again. Once you add water you cannot take it back out, and over-thinned ink writes pale, feathers and can grow mould.

  1. Fill a clean pipette or syringe with distilled water. Tap water carries minerals and chlorine that can react with dyes.
  2. Add water to the bottle in drops, not millilitres. Start with two or three drops per 30 millilitres of ink.
  3. Cap the bottle and shake gently for ten seconds, then let it stand for an hour.
  4. Test with a dip pen or a cheap pen on the paper you normally use. Compare the line against a fresh sample if you have one.
  5. Repeat in single drops until flow returns. Most bottles recover within five per cent added water.
  6. Label the bottle with the date and what you added, so future you knows its history.

For a pen rather than a bottle, flush with lukewarm water, then refill. If the nib still skips, soak the section overnight in water with a drop of dish soap, rinse thoroughly and dry it before inking.

Flattening paper that has cockled or curled in a dry apartment

Paper that has dried unevenly will not lie flat, and forcing it flat with a heavy book alone often fails because the fibres have set in a curled shape. You need to reintroduce a little moisture, then press. This is the same principle behind stopping curl in stored paper generally.

Work in a room with moderate humidity, ideally 40 to 50 per cent. If your apartment reads 15 per cent, run a humidifier in a closed bathroom for an hour and work there, or place the paper in a sealed box with a damp sponge for a few hours until it relaxes.

  1. Lay the curled sheets between two sheets of clean blotting paper or unprinted newsprint.
  2. Place the sandwich between two rigid boards, such as acid-free board or clean MDF.
  3. Add even weight: books, a cutting board, a stack of magazines. Aim for a few kilograms spread across the whole surface.
  4. Leave it for 24 to 48 hours in a room at moderate humidity.
  5. Check without flexing the sheet. If it still curls, repeat with slightly more moisture, not more weight.
  6. Store the flattened sheets flat, in a box or folder, never upright in a tight file where edges can cockle again.

Never iron paper, never press it while damp enough to feel cool, and never use heat to dry it faster. Heat drives moisture out unevenly and can set a worse curl than you started with.

Heating systems do not just warm air, they change its moisture and its movement, and the two effects together decide what your ink does in February.

Office buildings add their own variables. Large commercial systems often run very dry in winter, and a desk near a supply diffuser can sit below 20 per cent relative humidity all day.
