A collection teaches you nothing by sitting in a drawer. Projects do the teaching, and the useful ones are narrow. Each of the following isolates one skill, takes an evening or a weekend, and leaves you with something you will refer back to. None of them requires buying much, because the point is to learn what you already own.

Label everything with the paper name, its weight and the date. An unlabeled sample is decoration.
Why one skill at a time
Museum teaching programs use this shape. The Robert C. Williams Museum's teacher's handbook organizes papermaking for school groups into separate, self-contained activities with their own materials and outcomes, rather than one long build. A short activity that ends in a result you can hold is what makes the underlying idea stick.
The same logic applies to your own bench. If a project has three new skills in it, you will finish with a mediocre object and no clear lesson.
Making a sheet, if you get the chance
Hand papermaking is the project that changes how you read a paper label. A university studio makes clear what the process involves. The University of Iowa Center for the Book's papermaking studio is equipped with a hydraulic press, a two pound beater, a Valley beater, a standing screw press, stack and loft drying, five vats and both Western and Japanese-style molds. That equipment list tells you where the variables are: how the fiber is beaten, how the sheet is formed, how it is pressed, how it is dried.
You do not need any of it to try the idea. A kitchen blender, a window screen in a frame and a stack of torn envelopes will pull a rough sheet. After that, terms like formation, rattle and grain stop being marketing.
Keeping the results
Store the outputs together and date them. The reference book in particular becomes the thing you carry to a shop, and it is the fastest route to choosing materials without repeating purchases. Projects also expose gaps in the plan, which is a good reason to revisit planning the collection after the first two are done.
Common questions
How long does the reference book take? About twenty minutes for the first ten papers, then two minutes per paper as you buy them. Keep it in the same drawer as the paper.
Do I need a bone folder for the notebook project? No. The back of a butter knife folds paper adequately. Buy the tool once you know you will make more than three.
What is grain direction and why does it matter? Fibers align during manufacture. Paper folds cleanly along the grain and cracks across it. Tear a scrap both ways and you will feel the difference immediately.
Can I do the dilution ladder with any ink? With dye inks, yes. Do not dilute pigment or iron gall inks, because you may destabilize them and end up with sediment in a pen.
