Printers and papermakers choose paper for an ink before anything else. What their working habits reveal, and which of them transfer to a home desk.

People who print or make paper for a living do not choose a sheet and then wonder what will happen. They choose it for a specific ink, on a specific press, at a specific moisture content. A working studio is a list of controlled variables

Look at what a letterpress studio actually contains. The University of Iowa Center for the Book's printing facilities hold Vandercook proof presses across two studios, over six hundred cases of metal type including Joanna, Bembo, Gill Sans and Spectrum, wooden type, a platemaker and a type lab moved into the building in 2012.

Every item on that list is a variable someone decided to control. The press sets impression depth. The type sets the ink-bearing surface. The paper is chosen last, to suit both. A home writer has fewer variables, but the same discipline applies: fix the paper, fix the pen, then judge the ink.

Where the paper's behavior comes from

Hand papermakers think about fiber before they think about surface. Dard Hunter, who is widely considered the father of hand papermaking in the United States, traveled to study papermaking traditions worldwide, collected the artifacts of the trade, and wrote the books that documented it, including work on papyrus and amatl alongside Western and Asian papers.

What that tradition establishes is that a sheet's character is set early. Fiber choice and beating time determine drainage, rattle, absorbency and fold strength. Sizing is applied on top of that. When a paper feathers, the cause may be no sizing, or it may be a short, heavily beaten fiber that was always going to drink ink.

What transfers to a desk

  • Choose paper for the pen you use most, not for the pen you admire.
  • Change one thing at a time and write the change down.
  • Keep one control sheet and one control ink permanently.
  • Judge a pairing over a page, not over a signature.
  • Record the batch or year of any paper you liked, since mills change runs.

What does not transfer

Makers control humidity, often to a set range, because damp paper takes an impression differently and dry paper cracks at the fold. You will not control it, and you do not need to. They also work at volume, which means a bad batch is a business problem rather than a curiosity, and it justifies testing that would be absurd for one notebook. Do not copy a maker's paper choice directly, because it was made for a press with an impression, not for a nib that floats on a film of ink. Is letterpress paper good for fountain pens? Often not. Soft, bulky sheets made to take an impression tend to drink ink. Test before you commit to a pad of it.

Does handmade paper take fountain pen ink well? It depends entirely on sizing. Unsized or lightly sized handmade sheets are made for printing or painting and will feather badly under a wet nib.

What is rattle and does it matter? The sound a sheet makes when shaken. It comes from fiber and sizing, and it is a rough proxy for hardness. It correlates with how sharply a line holds.
