How to choose materials for a stationery collection
Which paper and ink properties actually decide longevity, why the lignin scare is mostly wrong, and a protocol for testing a candidate before you commit.
Choosing materials is where a collection either becomes useful or becomes a pile. The decisions are few. Fiber and sizing for the paper, dye or pigment for the ink, and whether you need the result to survive a decade or a week. Most of the marketing vocabulary around these choices is unreliable, and one widely repeated claim is simply wrong.

The lignin claim is mostly wrong
Paper yellows and goes brittle through hydrolysis of the cellulose chains and through oxidation. Lignin has taken the blame for that for decades. When researchers artificially aged papers with different lignin contents, all produced at neutral pH, they found no effect of lignin content on the aging rate. The property that actually correlates with poor aging is acidification, historically from the aluminum sulfate used with rosin sizing in acid papermaking.
Practical version: a neutral or alkaline sheet is what you want, and lignin-free is a weaker signal than pH neutral or buffered. A paper that says acid free and names an alkaline buffer has said the useful thing.

Ink, briefly
Dye inks dissolve, offer the widest color range and fade first under light. Pigment inks hold color far longer and demand more cleaning discipline. Iron gall sits in its own category, permanent to the point of being aggressive to the paper.
For a collection, hold one reliable dye ink for daily use and one pigment or document-grade ink for anything that has to outlive you. Buying eight colors before you have settled a workhorse is the most common ink mistake there is.
A test protocol you can repeat
Serious paper research is protocol-driven for a reason. The Iowa project's procedure for its specimens logged catalog details, dates, specimen type, whether foxing was present, whether the sheet was machine made, and measured thickness both of the tested leaf and of ten leaves together, before any instrument was used. The point is the fixed order, so that two specimens are genuinely comparable.
Your version takes four minutes:
- Record name, weight, fiber and price per sheet.
- Measure thickness of ten sheets together with a ruler and divide.
- Write four fixed marks with your control pen and ink.
- Time the dry point with a finger drag.
- Check the reverse for bleed against a light.
Run the same five steps on every candidate. That record is what makes a shop decision quick, and it feeds directly into the tool kit you keep on the desk. Where the results are stored afterward matters as much as the choice, which is the subject of storing the collection.
Common questions
Does acid free mean the paper will last? It means the sheet is not acidic now. Buffered paper, which carries an alkaline reserve, resists acid arriving later from the air or from adjacent materials.
Is recycled paper a bad choice for writing? Not by definition. Recycled fiber is shorter, so sheets tend to be softer and more absorbent, which affects feathering more than longevity.
Which ink should I use for anything I want to keep? A pigment or document-grade ink, on neutral or buffered paper, stored in the dark. Dye ink on a windowsill is the fastest way to lose a page.
How much should I spend to test a paper? One pad. If a paper is only sold in a box of ten, ask for a sample sheet or find someone who will trade one.
